Why is
Captain America's Shield So Special?
If you are a
fan of Captain America or Avengers, you would have noticed how the cap uses his
shield to overcome every threat he is subjected. Have you ever wondered what
makes his shield so wonderful, so strong and powerful? Read on to know the
exclusive details about the shield used by Captain America.
Captain
America has used multiple shields throughout his history. The most recent one
is a virtually indestructible disc-shaped shield made from an experimental
alloy. This alloy was an accidental discovery, the formula of which was not
available even to the inventor Dr. Myron McClain. an US metallurgist. In fact,
he was working on a government project during world war 2 to create an impenetrable alloy for the US
military tanks under the orders of President Franklin D. Roosevelt
The accidental alloy was found to be an alloy
of steel and the fictional vibranium. This alloy was never successfully
duplicated, although efforts to reverse-engineer it resulted in the discovery
of new metal adamantium.
Specialities
of Shield:
Captain
America's shield is virtually indestructible under normal conditions. It has
been proven strong enough to absorb Hulk's strength, and repel an attack from
Thor's mystical hammer Mjölnir without any major damage. It is said to absorb
all kinetic energy from an impact, thus captain America does not experience
transferred impact forced from inertial blocking.
However, it
has been vulnerable to cosmic and magical energies, evident from the fact that
few cosmic or godly opponents have
broken the shield.
These
physical properties also means the shield can bounce off of most smooth
surfaces, ricocheting multiple times with minimal loss in aerodynamic stability
or velocity. The shield can also absorb the kinetic impact of a fall, allowing
Captain America to land safely even when jumping off of several stories, as can
be seen in Captain America: Winter Soldier movie when he escaped from the
S.H.I.E.L.D.'s STRIKE squad by jumping off an elevator.
A common
misconception:
Many believe
that the shield can "magically" return to Captain America once he
throws it. But the shield has no magical powers, but the trick lies in the
physical and sensory attributes of cap. The "superhuman serum" that
enhanced Captain America's physical attributes also improved his mental
faculties—such as cognition, perception, balance, aim, and reflexes—to near
genius-level. This allows him to instantly calculate ballistic-physics and
predict the probable trajectory of objects in motion. This makes him a perfect
shot.
