Why Superman is vulnerable to Kryptonite?

Superman is one of the strongest superheroes of earth and he is considered as a legend and leader among the league of all superheroes. He is blessed with so many superpowers that, even the sky is not a limit. However, many people believe that there are only two major weakness of Superman - Kryptonite (Physical) & Lois Lane (Emotional).

You all must have watched many times how exposure to Kryptonite makes Superman sweat and collapse in many movies and cartoons. Have you ever wondered what is this Kryptonite and how did it reached earth. More importantly, why superman is so vulnerable to it?

What is Kryptonite & How it reached Earth?

There have been many theories about what is Kryptonite and how did it reach earth. Most prominent one is the belief that Kryptonite is a radioactive compound from the Superman's home planet "Krypton". It is also believed that when baby Kal-El (later on Superman on earth) was sent in a spaceship towards earth during the explosion of planet Krypton, few fragments of krypton were pulled and changed properties to become radioactive due to the impact of explosion. The second major theory is that a meteor around the Krypton planets found its way to earth and its role in making superman weak was found later.

In any theory, it is clear that Kryptonite is an alien (not from earth) radioactive substance which emits radioactive emissions continuously through decay mechanism (similar to that of earth elements). The only difference is the radiations does not affect humans, but affect all Kryptonians (including Superman). In fact, the radiations are believed to give some superhuman strengths to human beings when exposed for immense radiation levels for considerable time.

How does Kryptonite radiation affect Superman?

Radioactivity in general is a dangerous phenomenon for all living beings. On Earth, there are many radioactive compounds which emit radiation through decay process. Superman derives his powers from solar energy at cellular level. So, when superman is exposed to green kryptonite radiations, the energy generation is probably hampered, thus making his sweat and become weak. If the exposure is given for too long, even it is said that superman could die out of lack of energy for his body cells.

How does he tackles it?

Usually, Superman feels extreme fatigue as soon as he is exposed to the kryptonite, however if he moves away from the reach of its radiations, soon he gains his power back. Also, it is established that when the krytponite is closed with a lead vessel, it stops affecting superman. In one series, he even was provided with a special suit composed of lead found to keep superman unaffected. So, overall it can be said that any measure which prevents the exposure of kryptonite radiations will solve his misery with the kryptonite.
